Location: South Africa » Kwazulu Natal » Drakensberg » Southern Drakensberg » Himeville

Himeville, 5km north of Underberg, was founded in 1893 as a police outpost and the Border Mounted Rifles were billeted there to police the area which ranked among the favourite haunts of the gun runners and rustlers of Matatiele.

The village was proclaimed the seat of the magistracy of the district in 1902 and named for Sir Albert Henry Hime, prime minister of Natal at that time.

The village is especially known for the quality of the trout fishing in the many streams and lakes in the area.

* Himeville is the Natal town closest to the entrance to Sani Pass, the only pass suitable for vehicular (four wheel drive) traffic between Natal and Lesotho.  The road to the pass turns off 3km north of the village.  Himeville and Underberg also give access to a number of other crossings, passes in name only and negotable by Basotho pony and other pack animals only.  They are KwaNtuba, north of Sani, Mzimkhulu, Saddle Nek and Bushman's Nek near Devil's Knuckles.

* Himeville Nature Reserve (105ha) includes two trout lakes.

* The local museum is accommodated in the old fort and prison.

* The oak trees along the road between Himeville and Underberg were planted to cement relations between the two towns.  The trees were donated for this purpose by Kenneth Lund of the farm Hazeldene.
